Oubliette – Eternity Whispers (Review)

Oubliette - Eternity WhispersThis is the third album from US black metal band Oubliette.

I really liked 2018’s The Passage, and I can’t quite believe it’s been six years since that record. Now the band are back, with a refreshed lineup, (which includes the drummer of Inferi), and 39 minutes of new material in the shape of Eternity Whispers.

Oubliette play a form of melodic black/death metal that’s infectious and easy to enjoy. Eternity Whispers knows how to use its assets to its advantage. The two sides of the band’s style – black and death metal – are closely wrapped together, taking strengths from both.

The music is well-crafted and despite its inherent aggression benefits from a gracefulness that’s endearing. The melodies bite deep, entwined within the music, while also spearheading its assault. In this way the music tastefully balances its aggressive tendencies and its rich atmosphere.

The songs blur by in a stream of layered melody and burning intensity. There’s a shimmering beauty to much of the material, as the band unleash resplendent moods and bright cascading melodies, while still keeping things sharp and vigorous.

The darkness and the light work together on Eternity Whispers to produce a solid and enjoyable album of melodic black/death metal. With an easy appeal and assured presence, Oubliette’s return is a most welcome one.
