Wounds – Ruin (Review)

Wounds - RuinThis is the debut album from US death metal band Wounds.

Wounds play technical death metal and Ruin boasts 30 minutes of face-ripping material. Brought to us by a band that are clearly adept in the killing arts, Ruin is ready to blast off.

Ruin blends the old and the new, delivering a tech death assault with some classic metal know-how. The promo blurb says “For fans of Psycroptic, late Deeds of Flesh, Revocation, Spawn of Possession”, which sets the scene well enough, but I’ll also throw in names like Soreption and Decapitated. A touch of Morbid Angel too, on occasion, in some of the more slithering riffs.

The songs are well-written and tightly played. Wounds have that 00s tech death sound nailed down, although this is bolstered by contemporary technical skill and delivery. I like their singer’s voice too, as he has a ferocious bark that’s harsh and in your face. Contorted riffs and serrated rhythms characterise much of Ruin, and most of it hits the mark.

Wounds know what they’re doing with their music, and Ruin is a solid album of technical death metal that’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of the style.
