Saint Agnes – Bloodsuckers (Review)

Saint Agnes - BloodsuckersSaint Agnes are a rock band from the UK and this is their second album.

Bloodsuckers mixes together elements of punk, industrial, metal, and grunge, into 42 minutes of dark electronically enhanced rock music.

Bloodsuckers covers a range of styles over its eleven tracks, from high energy crowd pleasers to emotive ballads, and much in between, (although it very skews to the former). The music has a distinctly 90s feel, and if you think of Bloodsuckers as a blend of bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, White Zombie, Tura Satana, Marilyn Manson, Rage Against the Machine, and Ministry, then you’ll have a decent staring point for what Saint Agnes have to offer.

The songs are imbued with energy and attitude, and showcase the band’s talents well. The music has good presence, mixing atmosphere and mood with riotous presence and infectious hooks. Saint Agnes clearly know how to write a decent tune, and Bloodsuckers is packed with them. The band also have a formidable weapon in their arsenal in their singer. Her voice is versatile, raw, authentic, honest, passionate, and demands your attention. Combined with the music itself, it’s a prime reason why Bloodsuckers is destined to not be relegated to mere background music.

I can’t help but feel that Bloodsuckers would have been pretty huge if it had been released in the 90s. Despite being a product of the present day, it still has much to offer fans of the band’s charismatic, well-delivered style. Hopefully it will bring them much success in 2023, as there’s a lot of higher profile stuff out there that’s not as good as this is. It’s also an album that I’ll be regularly taking to the gym with me, that’s for sure, as it’s a shot of adrenaline and energy that’s hard to deny.

Very highly recommended.
