Lik – Misanthropic Breed (Review)

Lik - Misanthropic BreedLik are a Swedish death metal band and this is their third album.

Following on from 2018’s hugely enjoyable Carnage, Lik, (Featuring members of Witchery and Katatonia), now return with another 40 minutes of bloodsoaked material.

If you’re a fan of Swedish death metal in the style of Dismember and Entombed, then Misanthropic Breed is the place to be. A classic metal influence can heard here and there in some of the leads and solos, as can a touch of other death metal styles, but mostly it’s Swedeath all the way. It’s very, very good too.

The songs are brutal and waste no time in ripping your throat out. Grisly riffs and punishing rhythms abound, as do the style’s trademark melodies and ghoulish sense of ferocious aggression. It’s an energetic and adrenaline-filled ride, but not without macabre atmosphere when it’s needed. The album is filled with hooks and catchy moments, and the songwriting is on fire, resulting in songs that are easily absorbed and taste like exquisite gory treats.

Despite not containing anything you haven’t heard countless times before, the simple fact is Misanthropic Breed is a thoroughly enjoyable record. Lik know the style inside out, and simply play this sort of music better than most. This is a collection of damn good songs, and Misanthropic Breed is an album that keeps on giving.

Very highly recommended.
