Defeated Sanity are a well-know band in technical/brutal death metal circles, and with good reason; they have a history of producing music that’s brutally challenging, and destructively effective.
This current incarnation of Defeated Sanity is sleek and lethal. The band have streamlined their sound somewhat to focus on sheer brutality, but augmented by the sort of technicality that enhances the listener’s enjoyment, rather provides unnecessary obstacles to it. However, this is with the large caveat that you have to be initiated into this sort of thing in the first place, of course.
These new songs are concise and expertly-delivered expressions of the sort of death metal that is likely to put off many potential listeners due to its apparently impenetrable nature. However, for connoisseurs of the style, those adherents of brutality that are inured to, and positively crave, brutal heaviness and complex performances, then these new bursts of violence are a joy to weather again and again.
The songs are fast and belligerent, causing destruction and carnage wherever they explode out of the speakers. This is a visceral death metal experience that has packed a lot of meaty content into 34 minutes. It’s nasty and ugly, but in all of the good ways that we love in this style of music. Combine this with the effortlessly impressive technical mastery of the band, and you have a veritable masterpiece of technical/brutal death metal.
The Sanguinary Impetus is a very accomplished slab of brutality, and fans of the band who have been looking forward to this will not be disappointed.
