Ohhms are from the UK and this is their début EP.
This is a sterling release from this new band that combines elements of Doom, Post-Metal and Progressive Metal into two sprawling tracks that last just over 32 minutes in total.
It’s a darkly heavy release that explores the boundaries of Progressive music. The tracks draw from both Post-Metal’s expansive rule-lessness and Doom’s crushing intensity.
This is added to by the aforementioned Progressive edge that sees the band playing their instruments with the best of them and creating vast soundscapes of surprising depth and devotion.
The vocals are rough cleans sung with passion. They’re used sparingly but to great effect. The singer has a real presence and his voice carries a weight all of its own.
Both of the songs mix and merge the different aspects of Doom/Post-/Progressive Metal in a seamless manner and by the end of it it really feels like you’ve completed a worthwhile and enduring journey with the band.
This is atmospheric music that takes the time to build up to crescendo multiple times before a catharsis of sorts is finally achieved.
Ohhms have created a stellar début with Bloom and here’s to many more releases from them in the future.
