No Cure – It Is Going to Get Dark (Review)

No Cure - It Is Going to Get DarkThis is the debut album from US hardcore band No Cure.

No Cure play a merciless form of metallic hardcore, laced with elements of death metal that provide extra kick. On It Is Going to Get Dark the band spend 34 minutes showing exactly what they can do, delivering a collection of energetic bruisers that hit the spot.

It Is Going to Get Dark is a raging, bone-breaking record that does its damn best to destroy everything around it. The metal and death metal influences only add to the music’s hardcore heaviness, making sure that No Cure are as brutally crushing as they can be.

It Is Going to Get Dark is a really good example of a band mixing styles with ease. Both metal and hardcore parent styles feed each other, leading to something greater than the sum of its parts. All of the band deliver the goods, but the singer’s impressive range of harsh vocals should be especially noted. Guests pepper the album, but none really add anything over and above what No Cure’s singer brings to the table.

The songs are well-written, with plenty of dynamic heaviness and venom-laced catchiness. Whether providing throat-stomping riffs, lethal groove, or high octane ferocity, No Cure bring the hook-filled aggression very convincingly. The death metal components are skilfully wrapped around the hardcore heart of the band like barbed wire around a baseball bat. The metallic aspects of the music mean that the album doesn’t lack in meaty riffs, or even melodic leads in places.

No Cure have produced a strong, enjoyable record. It’s an exemplar of contemporary heavy music, and should find favour with fans of acts such as A Life Once Lost, Alpha Wolf, Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, Knocked Loose, Make Them Suffer, Malevolence, Sworn Enemy, and more.

Very highly recommended.
