This is the third album from US death metallers Frozen Soul.
Frozen Soul play old-school death metal. Across 36 minutes No Place of Warmth the band assault the listener with a barrage of riffs, growls, and deathly beats that are near-guaranteed to get bodies moving hard.
This is meat and potatoes death metal – no frills, just neck-stomping riffs and a bucket of crushing songs. Bolt Thrower are the obvious, primary comparison, with some Merauder mixed in, although Frozen Soul also incorporate other influences into their musical melting pot here and there – the sub-minute grinding and slamming Absolute Zero is one such example of this. Essentially, No Place of Warmth should find an appeal with fans of acts such as 200 Stab Wounds, Fulci, Gatecreeper, Necrot, Obituary, Tribal Gaze, Undeath, Xibalba, and the like.
As far as ancient, song-based death metal goes, Frozen Soul know what they’re doing. The band can write riffs and hooks like nobody’s business, while smacking you upside the head in no uncertain terms. It’s good stuff, and likely causes utter carnage when unleashed live.
The music is burly and muscular, driven by steamroller rhythms and aggressive belligerence. Melody seeps in like a twisting blade, adding depth and power to the band’s destructive grooves. The pulsing bass and pounding drums pulverise all around them. As for the singer, he channels primal death metal energies and gives a stellar performance throughout. Three songs features guest spots too, from the singers of Machine Head, My Chemical Romance, and Sanguisugabogg.
No Place of Warmth is a solid and enjoyable slab of old-school death metal. Frozen Soul have hit the mark with thunderous force. If you want a largely mid-paced old-school bludgeoning, then look no further than this.
Highly recommended.
