Deathraiser – Forged in Hatred (Review)

Deathraiser - Forged in HatredDeathraiser are a Brazilian thrash metal band and this is their second album.

Deathraiser have opened a portal into the past, out of which steps confidently Forged in Hatred, a 34-minute thrash metal warrior. Get ready to thrash, as this thing has The Riffs. So many riffs!

Forged in Hatred is a riff-focused album for people that wish to return to the aggressive thrash metal of the 80s – Kreator, Sepultura, etc. Deathraiser embody the spirit of this style. Their vision of thrash is one that’s fast, sharp, spiked, and lethal. They play hostile old-school thrash metal, inspired directly from the early days of the more ferocious side of the style, but delivered with contemporary skill. Forged in Hatred probably sounds exactly like you think it does, and do you know what? It’s gloriously good fun. This is violent old-school thrash metal, and it’s here to furiously bring the riffs.

Deathraiser come armed with the sort of bladed riffs that you just don’t see any longer. The songs are packed with them, and they’re wonderfully barbed. Around these fiery riffs the leads scream and the solos breathe fire, the drums punish and the vocals snarl and spit venom. Forged in Hatred‘s assets extend beyond the guitars, although these are a key part of what makes this album so compelling.

The thing which really makes Forged in Hatred work though is the songwriting; these are actual songs we’re dealing with here, and this is an enjoyable album to thrash along to like a maniac because of this. Everything ultimately works in concert with the guitars to produce a collection of tracks that have come to dominate. I’ll mention the riffs again here, simply so that every paragraph of this review has the word riffs in it. After all, Forged in Hatred is defined by its killer riffs, so it’s worth going on about them.

Bloody Hell though, the riffs on this thing. I mean, c’mon, they just don’t make them like this any more. Except, apparently, they still do in Brazil. Deathraiser have a clear talent for thrash, and Forged in Hatred is effortlessly enjoyable.
