Ignobleth – Voidspawn Sacrifice (Review)

Ignobleth - Voidspawn SacrificeThis is the debut EP from Ignobleth, an Italian black/death metal band.

Here’s we have a passionate slab of old-school darkness. Ignobleth play war metal brutality that’s grim and sinister. Voidspawn Sacrifice combines black and death metal – with a slight leaning towards the latter – into 15 enjoyable minutes.

Well, its an underwhelming start, unfortunately, with a pointless intro track that adds nothing to the release. After this though, we’re into the real action. Bestial Witchery is grim and nasty, and should have been the EP’s actual opener. It’s brutal and merciless, with raging blast beats and cavernous growls. The riffs are good, and the songwriting effective. There are a few different paces thrown in, and Ignobleth create a malevolent atmosphere that works. Good stuff.

Next up is the longest cut Omen of a Nuclear Spell, which opens with a riff torn out of the Incantation spellbook, heralding a doom assault drenched in malignant auras. I like that this song has a different character to its predecessor, despite being clearly cut from the same cloth. This song is soaked in occult atmosphere, and it’s credit to Ignobleth’s songwriting that even on their first EP they’re aware of the need to vary their assault.

The final track is called Wrathful Eradication, and in contrast to the preceding song blasts out of the speakers with a roar of midnight terror as soon as it starts. Mixing blistering speed, fierce groove, doom immensity, and spectral atmosphere, it effectively combines the elements present in the other two songs into a feast of darkened aggression and heaviness.

Voidspawn Sacrifice demonstrates a new band that are already skilled at what they do. I look forward to whatever Ignobleth do next, as the foundations have been laid here for potentially something special in the future to emerge.

Highly recommended.
