Ufomammut – Hidden (Review)

Ufomammut - HiddenUfomammut are an Italian doom band and this is their tenth album.

I always really enjoy catching up with Ufomammut. 2015’s Ectate, 2017’s 8, and 2022’s Fenice were all stonkingly good records, so expectations are high for the 45-minute Hidden. And, as I would have hoped, expectations have been satisfied.

Yep, Ufomammut are back baby, and they’re taking no prisoners. Continuing to travel on their psychedelic journey into dazzling mood-rich resplendence, Ufomammut have hit a darker part of their path, resulting in an increase in heaviness and texture, (both of which the band’s music is obviously no stranger too anyway).

Hidden is the embodiment of doom and psychedelia, spliced together into a delicious brew that goes down very well indeed. Ufomammut know their art, and channel it into hazy, fuzzy, heavy shapes that offer the listener an absorbing experience. The band’s psychedelic doomgroove is richly appointed with immersive atmospheric depth, allowing adherents of the style to lose themselves completely in these massive tracks.

Awash with powerful soundscapes that are just getting stronger and more crushing over time, Ufomammut unleash torrents of huge riffs and sludgy vibes that just don’t stop. With a broad 3D sound that you almost feel you can reach out and touch, Hidden has all of the tools it needs to make its mark.

After 25 years Ufomammut show no signs of slowing down or of wear and tear. Hidden is an easily enjoyable record for fans of heavy riffs and psychedelic doom atmosphere. Ufomammut are one of the best in the game at this sort of stuff, so make sure you spend some quality time with Hidden.
