Dissimulator – Lower Form Resistance (Review)

Dissimulator - Lower Form ResistanceThis is the debut album from Dissimulator, a Canadian death/thrash metal band.

Brought to us by current and ex-members of bands such as Atramentus, Beyond Creation, and First Fragment, Lower Form Resistance delivers 42 minutes of material from Dissimulator.

Here we have a ripping collection of technical death/thrash metal songs that explode in a cacophony of riffs and vicious characterful presence. Dissimulator’s approach is an old-school one, informed by present day knowledge and skill, and then channelled into futuristic sci-fi death/thrash. It’s reminiscent of the late 80s/90s in some respects, yet in others is clearly a product of the here and now.

Lower Form Resistance is sharp and precise. The songs are complex and intricate affairs, played with superlative technical skill and powered by gripping thrash energy. The riffs never stop, and the entire album is packed with the damn things. Dissimulator shred and tear their way through the running time, filling every second with furious deathly thrash and angular aggression. Importantly, amidst the absolute chaos and mayhem of Dissimulator’s head-pinning attack, the band create actual songs from within the chaos. Hooks lie within, taking various forms, and Lower Form Resistance ensnares very effectively.

Yep, this is one for old-school thrashers and modern tech fiends to both check out. A love of thrash is a prerequisite for Lower Form Resistance, but other than that, Dissimulator’s output should find wide appeal in the world of technical extreme metal.
