Yfel – Beneath the Mountain’s Vigil (Review)

Yfel - Beneath the Mountain's VigilThis is the debut album from US black metal band Yfel.

Across the 40 minutes of music on Beneath the Mountain’s Vigil Yfel reveal themselves as very capable purveyors of atmospheric black metal.

Yfel’s style is one that feels very American, and should find favour with fans of acts such as Panopticon, Wolves in the Throne Room, Alda, Falls of Rauros, Agalloch, and the like. Despite these initial comparisons, Yfel have clearly begun to successfully develop and express their own voice within this atmospheric arena.

As the album unfolds it quickly becomes clear that Yfel know their art intimately. The music is detailed with textured sounds and creative ideas that elevate the songs. Yfel’s material is emotive and creates an immersive atmosphere for listeners to delve into. The well-crafted songs mix blackened aggression with well-developed soundscapes, making for a collection of songs that feel like a journey has been undertaken by the end of it. Underpinned by a melodic power that’s understated in its potency, the music drips with emotion as it weaves its dark magic.

So, taking a familiar template and making it their own, Beneath the Mountain’s Vigil is easily digested, skilfully delivered, and effortlessly enjoyable. If you’re a fan of the style then there is a lot to like here, and the band’s above average execution of songwriting speaks well of itself.

Highly recommended.
