Serpents Oath are a black metal band from Belgium and this is their third album.
Following quickly on from last year’s Ascension, Revelation contains 47 minutes of new material for lovers of the classic blackened style.
Revelation is an album inspired by the second wave of the 90s. It does the style justice in an engaging way, while also acting as a decent vehicle for Serpents Oath’s own collective ability. It’s well-played and performed, with the band members succeeding in crafting nine professional hymns to darkness, (plus three intros/interludes, which are about as essential as such tracks usually are).
Infernal grandeur and fierce speed combine to form songs that are sleek, fast, and lethal. Hooks abound, and Serpents Oath take no prisoners. Dark melodies and blackened riffs imbue the music with dark vigour. The music is structured and arranged to maximise its melodic impact, making for songs that tear through the airwaves with aggressive dark lustre. The music is energetic and sharp, and carries a icy brutality that the band wield well.
Revelation is a classic blend of furious black metal that takes cues from the likes of acts such as Dark Funeral, Enthroned, Marduk, and Watain. It’s a record that’s easy to digest and enjoy if you’re partial to the more polished side of the style. Serpents Oath clearly know how to deliver this sort of material, and Revelation hits the spot.
A recommended listen.
