This is the second album from Greek symphonic modern metallers Project Renegade.
Ultra Terra is a 57-minute expression of contemporary metallic heaviness that takes in a range of old and new influences to produce an album of catchy, accessible songs. In other words, they play stadium-friendly heavy music with big choruses and symphonic enrichments.
Project Renegade exist somewhere on the modern, groove, gothic, melodic, symphonic, nu-metal, etc. spectrum. You could name a number of other similarly related genres and styles, but essentially it all comes together into the band’s delivery as a whole as a groove-heavy, soaring-choruses musical package. Across the album you can find different aspects of the above, all tied together with hook-focused songwriting that finds the band producing music that’s easy to get on board with if you’re a fan of this sort of style.
Project Renegade boast a very capable singer, and the music is mostly organised around her clean vocals. Harsher shouts are also used to add bite on occasion. The songs are well-written and arranged, balancing the spotlighted talents of the singer against rolling rhythms and symphonic layers. There’s also a mix of energetic crowd-pleasers and more atmospheric pieces. The symphonic and electronic elements are well-crafted. Along with the strong singing it brings to mind band such as Within Temptation and Evanescence, only with more of a cyberpunk modern metal feel and a nu-metal influence.
Ultra Terra is an enjoyable collection of tracks that should hopefully find favour with fans of stadium-friendly symphonic metal. Check this out if you’re a fan of the style, as you’re sure to appreciate what Project Renegade are doing here.
