Geld are an Australian hardcore band and this is their third album.
Currency // Castration is a 23-minute album of punk intensity and scathing riffs. Geld are a bundle of riotous energy, and they’re here to loudly cause mayhem.
Geld play violent hardcore punk, with the occasional metallic injection for some extra muscle. Separating them from other ostensibly similar bands though are psychedelic elements that bring shades of colour to the material that are lesser seen in hardcore realms.
This is an old-school style, but Geld play it with passion and enthusiasm. The songs are vibrant and well-constructed, with crusty d-beats that stomp and a singer that snarls. The tracks are short and nasty, and when they’re not smashing you around the head they’re entangling you in ensnaring hooks. It’s enjoyably unhinged stuff, yet at times it is unexpectedly detailed within this. The psychedelic influences can be felt, but add flavour and character, rather than being the focus themselves. First and foremost Geld play punk with virulent energy and angry intensity, it’s just that they enhance this with some extra sauce to make their recipe that bit tastier.
Geld unleash pummelling brutality across these 12 tracks, but never forget the need for both finesse and personality in order to truly make their mark. In this they succeed, and Currency // Castration is a charismatic and effective take on abrasive punk aggression.
A highly recommended listen for fans of the style.
