Necrofier – Burning Shadows in the Southern Night (Review)

Necrofier - Burning Shadows in the Southern NightThis is the second album from US black metallers Necrofier.

Following on from 2021’s Prophecies of Eternal Darkness, Burning Shadows in the Southern Night contains 47 minutes of melodic black metal with a classic heavy metal influence.

Necrofier’s music is well-written, well-crafted, and well-performed. It’s a professional package that the band have put together on their second album, and the results exceed the promise that they demonstrated on their debut. The melodies cut deeper and the solos more intricate and involved. The atmospheres wrought are vaster and more immersive, while the riffs are immediate and potent.

Across these ten new tracks it’s clear that Necrofier have turned the quality levels all of the way up. The songs are filled with wicked hooks and catchy elements. The music has that classic feel that you get when you know you’re listening to something that will benefit from listens than you might normally give something. Burning Shadows in the Southern Night demands you attention early, and keeps it by the quality of its songwriting, performances, and overall production values.

Burning Shadows in the Southern Night is a superior record in every way to its predecessor. Although I enjoyed Prophecies of Eternal Darkness, it has simply been eclipsed by its successor. If polished, well-executed melodic black metal appeals to you then Necrofier should absolutely be on your radar.

Very highly recommended for fans of bands such as Dissection, Thron, Immortal, Rotting Christ, Watain, Necrophobic, Uada, Frozen Dawn, Cloak, etc.
