This is the second album from UK blackened sludge/doom band Bast.
This is a colossal, sprawling slab of doom that lasts 58 minutes and is divided into an intro track and five mammoth songs.
Mixing together mournful and despondent doom, with sludge metal’s thick intensity, post-metal’s worldbuilding abilities, and elements of black metal’s dark atmospheric bite, Nanoångström is an impressive fusion of multiple complementary metal styles resulting in something quite compelling.
It’s a rich, textured listen, as the lengthy songs use their time wisely to explore different moods, feelings, and musical textures. The songs are emotive and affecting, combining heaviness and dark atmosphere with a potency that might be unexpected from such a relatively unknown band. Well, if there was any justice in the world they won’t remain unknown for much longer.
Memorability and depth of delivery smash together quite wonderfully on this release, and even on first listen you feel like you already know the band. This comes from their skill at songwriting and their highly engaging performances, however, rather than from any form of done-to-death-before fatigue. Sure, you can hear the band’s influences across the music, but what they do with these influences well-reflects the capabilities that Bast have as cohesive creators of captivating and immersive doom metal.
With great range and effectiveness, Nanoångström is a highly accomplished album, one which will keep you company for many, many hours to come.
