Death. Void. Terror. are a black/doom metal band from Switzerland, and this is their latest EP.
This 3-track release from Death. Void. Terror. brings us something otherworldly and foul to become absorbed in. Seeping out its foul corruption across 29 minutes of material, To the Great Monolith 2.5 delivers an unholy ritual that’s sure to ensnare many of the unwary.
To the Great Monolith 2.5 is a ritualistic exploration of the lesser travelled occult depths of black and doom. It’s a feast of tribalistic, droning, industrial, trance-inducing darkness, where multiple instruments and sounds are brought together in worship of unknown entities.
The six-minute ( — — ) Ametahna starts the EP, with ominous tones and unnatural sounds. The song unfolds like a drone piece that’s been warped by mood-focused black metal. In effect, it mixes its influences well, resulting in a song that’s both meditative and eerie. Think an occult Dødheimsgard gone drone, sort of.
The seven-minute (– – -) Srek Ysedon follows, crashing into life with doom-paced blackened darkness. The guitars sound like whirlwinds, restrained and channeled into a conjuring. This time, think a slow Mayhem, a menacing cross between De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and A Grand Declaration of War, but still with echoes of Dødheimsgard. (– – -) Srek Ysedon carries a real epic malevolence with it, and is a song that works its black magicks with twisted glee.
The final song is a 16-minute odyssey into exploratory waters with Third Monolithic Manifest. It’s a mix of various apocalyptic sounds and textures, with inhuman spoken word that haunts the soundscape with baleful finality. It’s a Hellish sermon delivered as the world falls apart and daemons stalk the wreckage of civilisation.
Despite the references included above, Death. Void. Terror. retain a voice of their own within this. To the Great Monolith 2.5 seeps into the listener’s bones the more you’re exposed to it.
