This is the second album from UK post-rock band Din of Celestial Birds.
The three-guitar, (and synths), post-rock approach of Din of Celestial Birds is back, with the 41-minute Takeoffs & Landings. 2023’s The Night Is for Dreamers made a decent splash in post-rock waters, so Takeoffs & Landings comes with a certain amount of expectation.
Spoiler alert: they have not disappointed.
Din of Celestial Birds are atmospheric, but also heavier than many post-rock outfits, to their benefit. It’s clearly post-rock, but concisely focused, with a clear understanding of the sort of dynamics that make songs pulse with life in the live environment. Other influences can be heard too, including those of progressive and alternative rock, post-metal, and elements of shoegaze. There are occasionally some damn fine meaty riffs on this record also, which is not something you can always say of even high quality post-rock/metal, (check out When Suddenly… as a prime example).
Takeoffs & Landings is a culmination of Din of Celestial Birds’ art so far, making for a well-crafted record that’s emotive and evocative. The band take the strengths of their previous work and bolster them with a wider array of sounds and ideas, while also stepping up a level generally with regards to songwriting and production values. Takeoffs & Landings sounds bold and confident.
Din of Celestial Birds offer the listener a wealth of texture and intricate detailing to become immersed in. Build and release mechanics are taken advantage of, and the band know how to write a good tune. The layered guitars and synths play a major part in shaping Takeoffs & Landings, providing a capable framework for the band to work within. This allows for the creation of an album that’s multifaceted, with great melodic range and rich colourful emotion.
Vast mood-focused soundscapes are constructed, ebbing and flowing between uplifting highs and melancholic lows, from soaring vibrancy to tragic heartbreak. It’s cinematic in scope, with ambitious reach, yet also has a side that’s intimate and personal. This is not something that’s always easy to balance, but Din of Celestial Birds pull it off across these 8 songs with aplomb.
The second album from Din of Celestial Birds is a roaring success. Whether it’s epic majesty or calm introspection, Takeoffs & Landings fully immerses the listener in the Din of Celestial Birds world. The songs are very moreish, and before you know it you’re fully on board with the record’s easy charm. Beneath the appealing shiny surface there’s a deeper substance that will keep you returning for more. A hugely enjoyable record.
