At the Gates – The Ghost of a Future Dead (Review)

At the Gates - The Ghost of a Future DeadThis is the seventh album from legendary Swedish melodic death metallers At the Gates.

After the tragic death of the band’s iconic singer Tomas Lindberg, this is the final album from the legendary At the Gates. Bringing us 44 minutes of material, The Ghost of a Future Dead is a scorching swansong from the band.

The Ghost of a Future Dead boasts that classic At the Gates sound in abundance. It reaches right back to Slaughter of the Soul for inspiration, delivering a record that absolutely does justice to the At the Gates legacy. It’s fast, fierce, and tight. The instantly recognisable snarling vocals ride waves of crunchy riffs, while the drums smash the heavens and the leads and solos duel and soar. The well-written songs contain no filler, just tasty meaty content that’s spiced with hooks. Even the instrumental interlude Förgängligheten is worth its running time.

A dark and aggressive record like this suits At the Gates. It seems that in horrific circumstances, everything has come together to produce a hugely enjoyable and rewarding album. The songwriting, performances, and production all speak of meticulous care and attention, but also raw passion and love for the music. Basically, The Ghost of a Future Dead is a killer album. It’s as simple as that.

The Ghost of a Future Dead is the strongest At the Gates album in many years. It’s a professionally crafted melodic death metal powerhouse that lacks nothing in passion or bite. If the style speaks to you, then this is one you won’t want to miss out on.

Essential listening.
