This is the seventh album from Swedish death metal band In Mourning.
In Mourning play melodic death metal with a progressive edge. With a duration of 47 minutes, The Immortal paints a rich canvas that captivates with its emotive depth and melodic colour.
The songs are intricate, but accessible, blending heaviness and melody to produce songs that evoke emotion readily and freely. Via harsh growls and soaring cleans do the songs communicate their intentions, which they follow up on via the worldbuilding of the instrumentation.
The Immortal is expressive and engaging throughout. It’s a record that’s driven by emotion. Every melody and atmospheric sweep is finely honed to ring out every last drop of feeling from the listener. Melancholic and dark, The Immortal takes the listener on a journey into the far reaches of the night.
Despite the undeniable beauty contained in the music, this is a death metal album at heart, regardless of its melodic trappings and progressive flourishes. In Mourning know how to write a good riff, and the guitars have plenty of weight to them. There is bite to the deep growls too, helping to fuel the aggressive aspects of the songs further.
I like this album very much. In Mourning have balanced emotive depth and purposeful heaviness, making for an album that’s very moreish; it’s easy and enjoyable to just keep diving into The Immortal over and over again. In Mourning have provided a feast of mood-focused aggression, atmosphere, hooks, and substance, and I have fallen for it.
Don’t miss this if you’re a fan of bands such as An Abstract Illusion, Barren Earth, Dark Tranquillity, Eternal Storm, Insomnium, In Vain, Iotunn, Ne Obliviscaris, Opeth, Wilderun, etc.
