This is the third album from French solo experimental act Mütterlein.
Following on from 2021’s split with Limbes and then debut album Bring Down the Flags, we now have the 40-minute Amidst the Flames, May Our Organs Resound.
On Amidst the Flames, May Our Organs Resound the artist behind Mütterlein has crafted an absorbing, hypnotic soundscape of darkened textured sounds. She mixes together elements of doom, industrial, dark ambient, post-metal, and black metal skilfully, weaving these sinister strands into a tapestry of expressive tracks. As a rough overview, I suppose you might term this something like industrial doom, or similar. Ultimately though it doesn’t matter, as the music speaks for itself.
The Mütterlein experience is a journey into sound and shape. It has the feel of a cinematic soundtrack, but without the gloss or polish – this is a well-produced record for sure, but it’s also dark, intense, and lurks in the underworld, delivering an emotive worldbuilding that’s wrapped in blackened atmosphere. There’s a deep-seated tension here that’s electrifying and malevolent, drawing the listener in, while shrouding them with menace and threat.
The music is layered and emotive. Amidst the Flames, May Our Organs Resound is a record to explore at length, letting the terror, rage, and cathartic release wash over you. Becoming immersed in Mütterlein’s world is transportive, and Amidst the Flames, May Our Organs Resound is an atmospheric work that you can easily lose yourself in.
Amidst the Flames, May Our Organs Resound has impressed. It’s a dystopian horrorscape that refuses to let you go once it has you in its claws.
Highly recommended.
