Church of the Sea – Eva (Review)

Church of the Sea - EvaThis is the second album from Greek doom band Church of the Sea.

Church of the Sea play an evocative form of doomgaze. The component parts of Eva are doom, shoegaze, electronic rock, and darkwave. These are brought together by the band into a 31-minute exploration of ethereal soundscapes.

Eva provides the listener with a textured journey into expressive waters. The music is dark and sensual, with layers of feeling and a rich, sumptuous atmosphere.

The flawless voice of the band’s singer is the obvious focal point of the music. This is capably given a backdrop of guitar, synths/electronics, and percussion that shape a landscape for her voice to roam freely. Taken together, it’s a simple list of ingredients that give rise to an album that’s layered, affecting, and engaging throughout.

Eva is an enchanting record. There is a strong hypnotic, transportive aspect of listening to Church of the Sea’s music that feels intimate in its intensity. It’s a well-crafted album that deserves a wider audience than it will likely get.

Make sure you spend some quality time with this one.
