Necronos are a Mexican death metal band and this is their debut album.
Charred Tongue is a 33-minute death metal album bursting with chaotic aggression that’s been tempered by a keen sense of worldbuilding. Mixing atmospheric, progressive, technical, and dissonant death metal together with skilled ability, Necronos have crafted an album that showcases their talents well.
The promo blurb recommends Charred Tongue for fans of bands such as Ulcerate, Gorguts, Execration, and Spectral Voice, which is a decent place to approach Necronos’s music from.
The music is instantly enjoyable, yet has a depth that ensures you want to return to it. It’s an album that has an atmospheric focus, but one that’s expressed via death metal’s inherent hostility. It may be harsh and punishing, but it has an intricate delivery and a surgical attention to detail that elevates it above the more barbaric or savage examples of the style. This restraint doesn’t extend quite so much to the vocals though; these are ragged and harsh inhuman utterances, and far more unhinged and unfettered than the rest of the music; the vocalist growls as if possessed.
Necronos explore sinister moods with dark intensity and cosmic immensity, and it is this aspect of their material that the band excel at. Charred Tongue is at its best when it is creating malevolent atmosphere and dark, eerie moods. The more aggressive parts of the music work well, but it’s when Necronos concentrate on malign worldbuilding that the music really comes to bleak unlife.
Charred Tongue is a solid and enjoyable debut album from a band that show much promise. Necronos already have a firm grip on their sound, and I look forward to how they continue to develop in the future. For now though, partake of Charred Tongue‘s darkened soundscapes and get lost in their crushing delivery.
