Against Evil – Give ’em Hell (Review)

Against Evil - Give 'em HellAgainst Evil are an Indian heavy metal band and this is their third album.

Against Evil play energy-filled heavy metal, and they play it very well. There are power and thrash metal influences at play here, particularly the latter, but essentially this is glorious fast-paced old-school heavy metal, delivered with contemporary passion and skill.

Give ’em Hell is riotously good fun. The guitars define the shape and feel of the songs, and the band fill every second with their enthusiasm for all things heavy metal. It’s packed with riffs riffs riffs. Everywhere you look there’s a fiery riff ready to burn away your tired jaded thoughts, filling your veins with molten metal and your heart with steel. There are solos aplenty and pounding drums that set the pace. With catchy songs and hooks flying around all over the shop, Against Evil know how to pen a good tune.

The vocals are well-performed and passionate. The singing fits the material well, and showcases an easy earthy charismatic presence. Aided by backing vocals and some very 80s gang shouts, the singing is as accomplished as the rest of the music.

Honestly, this is good stuff. It’s an unashamed throwback to the early days of heavy metal, but is of such quality that it doesn’t matter at all. Against Evil clearly understand the genre intimately, and their songwriting ability is ably demonstrated across this lean 32-minute record. Basically, if you’re a fan of old-school metal and thrash, then I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t enjoy this album. Check it out.
