This is the fourth album from US black metallers Vimur.
I like Vimur a great deal. 2022’s Transcendental Violence stood out as a quality black metal record, so it’s great to have the band back and delivering the goods. Boasting 41 minutes of new material, The Timeless Everpresent finds Vimur on fine form. The Timeless Everpresent may be as cold as absolute zero, but it’s still a scorcher.
The Timeless Everpresent is sharp and precise, offering up the sort of cosmic melodic black metal that Vimur do so well. With an album cover that’s less colourful than those of the band’s previous albums, I was wondering how this might be reflected in the music. The short answer is that Vimur’s sound remains intact, only now the songs are just that bit more geared towards spectral warfare, and the ice-rimmed aggression that comes with that.
The music bursts with vicious violence, raw aggression, and blackened intensity, while still allowing Vimur to be exploratory as they travel the outer realms of frozen spacetime. The riffs are fast and merciless, and the potent melodies carve deep into your consciousness. The Timeless Everpresent is a lot catcher than you’d expect. The music is infectious and compelling, delivering energetic slices of blackened might that are extremely well-realised.
The strong songwriting is enhanced by a commanding performance and a sound that allows Vimur to shine darkly in the endless night of deep space. All of the instruments sound like they’re deadly weapons, and the harsh screams are absolutely venomous, while still retaining an expressive quality that’s satisfying.
Simply put, this is a top quality black metal album. Starting from a base of ancient materials Vimur have crafted a sleek and lethal expression of contemporary blackened violence. It’s a hideously enjoyable listen. Vimur continue to journey to the furthest reaches of creation, and they’re ready for war.
Very highly recommended.
