Neurectomy – Overwrought (Review)

Neurectomy - OverwroughtThis is the debut album from US death metal band Neurectomy.

Overwrought contains 32 minutes of technical death metal and Neurectomy boasts the drummer of Origin in their ranks. Strap in safely, because Neurectomy are about to take you on a ferocious ride.

When approaching Overwrought, let’s take a look at this line from the promo blurb – “The band recommends listening to the album front to back as there is a natural order of progression in intensity where each track generally tops the preceding one”. Well, it’s pretty much true. Overwrought is an intense listen, and a real feast of merciless intricacy for fans of the nastier side of tech death.

The drum performance is as insane and fantastic as you would expect, but don’t let that blind you to what the rest of the band are up to. The guitars dazzle and bruise with technical extremity, while the vocals are relentless growls that threaten to tear you apart.

Neurectomy are all about sheer destructive brutality, and they accomplish this through complexity and chaos. Elements of grindcore and mathcore can be heard amidst the carnage, as well as, (in key places), pure straight-up mosh-friendly groove. This speaks well to the songwriting ability of the band; the intricate mayhem on Overwrought serves the overall songs as well as itself, making for an album that’s easy to listen to and enjoy if you’re a fan of this sort of mind-numbing extremity.

Well, this is just great. Don’t miss out on this, it’s as simple as that.
