Somniate – We Have Proved Death (Review)

Somniate - We Have Proved DeathSomniate are a black metal band from Czechia and this is their second album.

Following on from 2020’s The Meyrinkian Slumber, Somniate, (who feature current/ex-members of Brutally Deceased, Self-Hatred, Mallephyr, and Heaving Earth), are now back with another 33 minutes of furious black metal.

Somniate play sophisticated modern black metal, with fiery passion and aggressive zeal. Created with a number of good ideas in mind, as well as some striking melodic work, these six tracks each explore Somniate’s world of depth and substance.

Fusing melancholic melody, blackened psychedelia, blunt brutality, progressive grace, and elemental dissonance, Somniate craft music that’s harsh, yet cultivated. The tracks are well-crafted examples of how to combine ingredients like these into songs that mix them all together well. Somniate have a clear vision for their music, and We Have Proved Death showcases this effectively.

This is a satisfying collection of songs that brings black metal’s atavistic fury into a contemporary framework of confrontational dark art. Somniate’s refined aggression is infectious, offering grim intensity and curious nuance aplenty to get lost in.

Highly recommended.
