This is the debut album from Weite, an international rock band.
Featuring members of Elder and High Fighter, Weite play a charismatic mix of 70s psychedelic, progressive, and experimental rock, with jazz elements. Assemblage is an instrumental record, and spends 39 minutes taking the listener on an expansive worldbuilding journey.
The music has somewhat of a raw and loose feel, as if you’re listening to a cultured and refined jam session. Despite this, it’s also clear very early on that Assemblage is not aimless or directionless. Each song has a purposeful mix of styles and ideas, blended together to craft a soundscape that’s hypnotic and absorbing. This is the sort of album that you can drift off to sleep to, have playing in the background while you do something else, or concentrate on intently. This versatility is testament to its immersive atmosphere and quality of delivery.
Ranging from the calm, relaxed and introspective, to the energetic and buoyant, the music is engaging and honest in its execution. All parts of the music are effectively curated and channelled into broad tapestries of texture and colour, designed to evoke in the listener a variety of feelings that draw them in, or transport them away, depending on individual circumstances.
Assemblage is an enjoyable album that’s easy to get on board with if you have a taste for well-crafted instrumental music. Rooted in the old, but sounding remarkably fresh and new, Weite’s first album is an easy one to recommend.
