Deitus – Irreversible (Review)

Deitus - IrreversibleThis is the third album from UK black metallers Deitus.

Irreversible contains 39 of black metal that traverses both the traditional and modern realms of the style. Upon first listen it’s quickly apparent that Deitus are no generic act, and subsequent spins only cements the view that they are definitely operating on a higher plane of existence than many of their so-called peers.

Deitus know how to write music that’s well-structured and transportive. Theirs is an emotive art, one that’s communicated via the sort of timeless-yet-contemporary black metal that’s expansive and broad, yet also utterly vicious. Each song on Irreversible has its own character and place on the album, and each showcases a different facet of Deitus’ multifaceted personality. From well-sculpted progressive worldbuilding, to traditional blackened world destroying, to post-blackened dark gloom, to immense blackened doom, to death metal muscle, and much besides, Deitus provide the listener with an experiential journey into their world.

Built from quality ingredients that have been carefully selected for their choice cuts, these songs are effective and enjoyable. Irreversible is wealthy in its collection of scything riffs and impactful melodies, but how it wraps and twists these together into memorable and absorbing songs is quite the achievement.

Irreversible is a very strong album. Deitus have crafted a release that’s satisfying and rewarding. If you like your black metal on the modern side and want well-written songs that showcase depth and substance along with harsh blackened style, then Irreversible is for you.

Very highly recommended.
