This is the third album from Indian death metallers Gutslit.
Oh wow, has it really been six years since the crushing Amputheatre? Apparently so. Nevertheless, Gutslit have finally returned to the death metal killing arenas, armed with 30 minutes of gruesome new material in the spiked, brutal shape of Carnal.
Carnal sees the return of the band’s original vocalist from Skewered in the Sewer, and his voice is monstrous. The singer of Benighted also appears on one track, adding his fearsome lungs into the mix.
The album opens without any fanfare with the sort of pulverising riff that could crush a house. Gutslit mean business and they’re not messing around. These songs are intense, violent, and murderously brutal.
Gutslit’s approach to death metal is one that marries together technical complexity and straightforward savagery, bringing together the best of both worlds. Brutal death metal aggression, huge slam riffs that make you move whether you want to or not, and occasion touches of deathgrind intensity all add fuel to the fire as Gutslit tear through the tracks. Add to this far more personality than most bands of this ilk have, as well as the sort of songwriting that’s infectious and moreish, and you have a prime slab of meaty death metal carnage to enjoy.
Oh yes, this is the stuff. Packed with quality riffs, ferocious grooves, and killer songs, Carnal destroys the opposition with contemptuous ease. Carnal is effortlessly fun to listen to. Gutslit have demonstrated once more why they’re one of the best bands peddling this sort of brutality; they know how to write a damn good death metal tune that’s hard to stay still to.
Essential listening. Bow to your death metal overlords.
