Miasmes – Répugnance (Review)

Miasmes - RépugnanceMiasmes are a French black metal band and this is their debut album.

After how much I enjoyed last year’s debut EP Vermines, Répugnance is an album I have been looking forward to. The band have delivered the goods, as I was hoping they would, and Répugnance gives us 42 minutes of new material, (or mostly new – Pestilence makes a reappearance from the EP).

All of the elements that drew me to the EP are present and correct. This is a black metal album that’s played in the classic second wave style, with a serving of punk attitude and some savage guitar solos. Miasmes are no stranger to building atmosphere either, and Répugnance has a lot to offer fans of the original style.

Raw and harsh, the music tears out of the speakers with charismatic intensity and an army of riffs. The thick blackened groove is compelling, and the songwriting one of spiked hooks and engaging grim darkness. It’s easy to enjoy what Miasmes offer, and hard to remain still while they peel off huge ugly riffs that won’t stop.

Well-written and well-performed, Répugnance is effortlessly enjoyable if you’re a fan of the stripped-back, no-frills blackened style. Miasmes play old-school black metal like it was new and vibrant, and who but the most jaded could bemoan that?

Very highly recommended.
