Kampfar – Til Klovers Takt (Review)

Kampfar - Til Klovers TaktThis is the ninth album from Norwegian Black Metallers Kampfar.

It’s been a while since I last caught up with what Kampfar were doing, (2015’s Profan). Their brand of pagan black metal is always entertaining, so when Til Klovers Takt appeared I was eager to check it out.

Containing 45 minutes of new material, Kampfar’s music is professionally crafted and delivered with finesse. Til Klovers Takt is a very engaging and satisfying listen throughout.

Kampfar’s black metal is compelling and emotive. The band’s pagan style is melodic and potent. Its atmospheric and immersive, yet also has enough aggression to keep adherents of the blackened arts content. The pagan and folk influences are not as prominent here as they sometimes are, but still enhance the rest of the music when they appear, without becoming overbearing.

The music’s combination of screams and cleans are very effective. Both vocal styles are extremely well-performed, portraying mood and character with accomplished presence and considerable character.

Til Klovers Takt delivers a darker incarnation of Kampfar this time around, and it’s a look/feel that suits them well. These new songs are well-written and rhythmically powerful. They are blessed with hooks aplenty and are awash with mood-rich atmosphere.

Til Klovers Takt offers a timeless black metal journey that’s epic and inspiring. Whenever I check in with Kampfar they impress me more than I seem to realise, and this new album is extremely enjoyable.

Very highly recommended.
