Verberis – Adumbration of the Veiled Logos (Review)

Verberis - Adumbration of the Veiled LogosThis is the second album from Verberis, a black metal band from New Zealand.

Across five expansive songs, Adumbration of the Veiled Logos spends 58 minutes transporting the listener to vast blackened soundscapes and subjecting them to harrowing esoteric visions.

Verberis’ abyssal black metal contains elements of death metal in its rarefied embrace. The songs are dark and feel otherworldly. Sometimes they rage with predatory intensity, at others they are melancholic with an introspective focus. Frequently long and always engaging, the music of Verberis is both immersive and terrifying.

The band build, maintain, and use atmosphere very well. The esoteric moods and malignant auras that infest this work are absorbing and well-judged. This is true regardless of the speed the band are playing at; when slow and gloomy they offer layered soundscapes, and when fast and violent they provide depth with emotive riffs and blackened melodies. Frequently the two sides of the band are blurred together into mid-paced expressions of darkness and sinister intent.

Adumbration of the Veiled Logos is a strong album that takes time to fully appreciate. However, for those with the taste and constitution for it, its labyrinthine charms are many, and its rewards rich.

Very highly recommended for connoisseurs of underground blackened art.
