Persecutory – The Glorious Persecution (Review)

Persecutory - The Glorious PersecutionThis is the latest EP from Persecutory, a Turkish black metal band.

It’s been quite some time since I caught up with Persecutory. 2016’s Perversion Feeds Our Force, in fact. They’re had two albums released in the meantime, neither of which I’ve heard, so The Glorious Persecution is as good a time as any to get reacquainted with the band’s aggressive sound.

The Glorious Persecution contains 3 songs spread out over 23 minutes.

The opening song is called Infernal Gateways to Watchers, and Persecutory waste no time in establishing a sound that dominates. The music is massive in stature, while tearing out a malevolent riff that just bites down hard. It’s a daemonic melodic assault, powered by blast beats and harsh snarled vocals that sound inhuman. Between thick blackened groove, grim blasting aggression, and searing melodic darkness, Persecutory are on fire. It seems they have come a long way since their debut EP.

Up next is Ecstatic Demonlords, which slithers into existence on a sickening, menacing riff, before exploding into blast beats and fierce violence. Persecutory continue to demonstrate a keen understanding of how to forge blackened distortion into lethal malefic shapes, and blend it effectively with accursed melody.

The final cut – the title track – is the longest here, and brings Persecutory’s assets together to end the EP with a potent flourish. Cloaked in dark atmosphere, belligerent attitude, and baleful melody, the song bleeds malign hostility and infernal presence.

Persecutory have impressed. With a strong sound that showcases their Hellish black metal well, The Glorious Persecution hits the mark.
