Mother of Millions are a Greek progressive metal band and this is their fourth album.
Magna Mater contains 43 minutes of progressive metal. As my first encounter with Mother of Millions this is an extremely strong one. Let’s dig into this impressive, powerful record.
Magna Mater presents as a contemporary progressive metal album, with elements of progressive and post-rock sewn into it. It’s the sort of album you describe as having a cinematic flavour, both in scope and ambition. It deserves this description too, as this is music that is luscious and expansive.
The music is well-written and intricate, but doesn’t lack from a modern form of heaviness. I like that it’s a decently heavy album in places, although not at the expense of the songwriting, which focuses on holistic songcraft. The songs are well-considered, striking a good balance between hooks and atmosphere that works in their favour. The heavy sections are offset by lighter, airier ones, working in tandem for the benefit of the whole.
Magna Mater is sumptuously layered and atmospheric, with a detailed delivery that’s immersive. There’s an emotive base to the music which is built upon by the band’s skilled ability to craft expressive music. The deft use of melody and keyboards enhance the core songwriting, making for songs that are memorable and enjoyable.
Bands of this ilk usually fall down in the vocal department, but that’s not the case here. Mother of Millions have a singer who would steal the show if it wasn’t for the strengths of the rest of the music. As such, Magna Mater is a very well-rounded album, and no part of its makeup lets the side down.
With dynamic flavouring, atmospheric weight, and feeling-rich delivery, Magna Mater offers the listener an engaging journey to embark upon. The songs are strong and enjoyable throughout. It’s a progressive metal album of great potency; if this style speaks to you, don’t miss out on this gem.
Very highly recommended.
