One Master are a US black metal band and this is their fourth album.
It’s been a while since 2017’s Lycanthropic Burning, (also check out 2015’s Reclusive Blasphemy), but One Master have finally returned. Boasting 55 minutes of new material, The Names of Power further cements One Master’s name in the annals of USBM.
One Master continue their traditional black metal route through the underworld. It’s not all business as usual though, as The Names of Power is their longest and most diverse offering to date. It’s a strong demonstration of raw underground black metal, yet one that’s also clear, effective, and well-differentiated. Each of the six tracks has a malevolent personality of its own, one that shares aspects with the rest of the songs, but is also recognisable as its own entity.
One Master have a talent for producing scything blackened riffs and grim dark grooves. The music’s mix of apocalyptic might and occult mood is infectious. Whether blisteringly aggressive, cold and harsh, or sinister and atmospheric, the music on The Names of Power is powerfully wrought. There’s a lot to like here. A few picked at random; I really like the high pitched screams, the occasional use of melody, the quality riffs, the subtle hooks that keep you returning, and the satisfying production.
The Names of Power is the most accomplished and enjoyable One Master album they have unleashed on the world so far. If you’re a fan of the style, then this is for you.
Very highly recommended.
