This is the debut album from Canadian black metal band Boréalys.
L’heritage brings us 61-minutes of atmospheric black metal. Boréalys have produced an enjoyable slice of mournful black metal that recommends itself well.
L’heritage exudes dark atmosphere and melancholic presence. Rich melody is used to produce shaded colours and engaging feeling, while the immersive songwriting emphasises mood and atmosphere over everything else. The well-written music works well across the album; the five actual songs here are all easy to become absorbed in as the band craft blackened soundscapes with many compelling qualities.
Boréalys create long-form songs that grow into themselves well, spreading their sorrowful atmospheres far and wide. Despite consisting of music that is thoroughly desolate at its heart, there’s a bleakness here that’s counteracted by the swirling melodies that seem to rise from the music like soaring zephyrs.
L’heritage is the sort of album that you can lose yourself in as it unfolds its atmospheric darkness. If you are a fan of this sort of gradually building atmospheric black metal, then Boréalys is a band you should check out.
