This is the second album from one-man Finnish black metal band Wooden Throne.
Brought to us by a member of October Falls, Eternal Wanderer of the Night Sky is a 34-minute atmospheric black metal album that incorporates elements of doom into its dark framework.
This is black metal with an epic streak. There’s a feeling of cosmic majesty that imbues every part of Eternal Wanderer of the Night Sky with an otherworldly depth. The songs are well-crafted and considered. Built around atmosphere, and focused on the mood-rich creation of immersive blackened soundscapes, the music absorbs the listener in the unknowable heavens and all of the richly reflective emotions that come with that. Eternal Wanderer of the Night Sky is contemplative in nature, and never fails to engage with its thoughtful, yet emotive brand of dark music.
The songs are primarily slow and gradually unfold with the inevitability of the rising moon. The artist’s use of leads is notable; the winding, near-ubiquitous approach taken with them works well, especially as they are entwined with the rest of the music, rather than souring above and beyond it all.
Piano and synths are firmly embedded in Eternal Wanderer of the Night Sky. They’re an integral part of the music’s character, layering and enriching everything they touch. The piano is melancholic and beautifully sombre, while the synths are spacious and expansive, spreading the album’s celestial atmosphere far and wide.
Eternal Wanderer of the Night Sky flows well from song to song, and presents as a holistic work that is absorbing in its focused worldbuilding. The artist behind Wooden Throne has produced an album that’s enjoyable and compelling.
Highly recommended.
