Pyrkagion – The Katechon and the Unending Fire (Review)

Pyrkagion - The Katechon and the Unending FireThis is the debut EP from US black metal band Pyrkagion.

The Katechon and the Unending Fire is a 26-minute EP consisting of two tracks. Brought to us by members of Bell Witch, Human Effluence, and Hissing, Pyrkagion deliver a strong lesson in modern black metal.

The Katechon and the Unending Fire is a well-crafted work of atmosphere and substance. Taking elements of classic black metal and fusing them with a modern interpretation, the two songs on this EP are timeless in their blackened appeal. The band’s style sort of reminds me of a cross between an atmospheric approach, (Wolves in the Throne Room, Weakling, Altar of Plagues), and something more sinister and evil, (Deathspell Omega, Nightbringer, Funeral Mist, Schammasch).

The music flows and churns like something alive, with pulsing vitality and dark splendour. Birthed from cosmic darkness and existing in the void, this is accomplished black metal that has a strong otherworldly presence.

Constructed from compelling riffs and serpentine rhythms, the music unfolds with lethal grace. Fiery speed and aggression are wielded like blades, and rich layers of absorbing synths are deployed with skill. Pyrkagion are adept at producing the sort of twisting melodies that entangle a person firmly.

These two songs are satisfying and rewarding. The Katechon and the Unending Fire is an impressive EP, and bodes extremely well for the future of Pyrkagion. Now, more please.

Very highly recommended.
