Beyond the Permafrost – Fallen from the Throne (Review)

Beyond the Permafrost - Fallen from the ThroneThis is the debut album from French black metallers Beyond the Permafrost.

Fallen from the Throne contains 33 minutes of black metal that’s influenced by the traditional style and second wave era. Beyond the Permafrost have created an album that should easily find favour with any adherent of the old-school blackened arts.

Beyond the Permafrost offer a satisfying and authentic trip into dark, frozen lands. The journey is perilous, but not without its rewards. The songs are well-crafted and executed by a band that clearly not only understand their classic black metal, but know how to deliver it with unholy passion. In style, Fallen from the Throne exists somewhere between bands such as Darkthrone, Nehëmah, Mayhem, and Mütiilation.

The music is grim and cold, in true old-school black metal fashion. It’s heavy on the atmosphere, and the band make good use of blackened melody and riffs to weave tales of icy far away lands. The vocals consist of evil utterances that are as atavistic and ancient as the rest of the music. Beyond the Permafrost genuinely sound as if they could have put these songs together and released them in the 90s.

Honestly, if you’re a fan of the early 90s black metal style then it’s easy to like what Beyond the Permafrost have unleashed here. It’s played with character and skill, and I just can’t help but really like it.

Highly recommended for all fans of traditional black metal.
