This is the debut album from Belgian post-metal/sludge band Pothamus.
Pothamus play an atmospheric amalgamation of post-metal, post-rock, drone, shoegaze, and sludge influences, which has resulted in 50 minutes of rich, luscious music.
Pothamus are adept at creating ethereal soundscapes that draw the listener in and leave them immersed in an expressive musical world. A mix of vocals, clean and harsh, accompany the listener on their journey into the realm of Pothamus. These mainly play the role of highlighting and accentuating the music, acting as additional instruments rather than focal points in their own right, at least for the most part.
The music on this album is mood-driven and drips with atmospheric presence and shimmering radiance; this is a band that have opted for feeling and depth instead of instant gratification, and are all the better for it. Pothamus seem to enjoy their tribal drumming, and place an emphasis on percussive detail in their songwriting. Hypnotic rhythms perfectly complement this creative approach, with the instruments working together in a harmonious synchronicity that’s missing in lesser bands. Many considerations and approaches such as the above have gone into the creation of this album, and have resulted in a nuanced, emotive, and textured work.
Raya is an immersive and compelling experience. Pothamus are clearly skilled in their chosen field, and their debut album is an impressive and enjoyable creation.
Very highly recommended.
