Warfuck are a French grindcore band and this is their third album.
Warfuck have an unsubtle name to go along with their unsubtle sound. 23 minutes of blistering grindcore spread across 15 rabid tracks? Why, I don’t mind if I do.
This is the long-overdue follow-up to 2013’s Neantification, and the latest embodiment of Warfuck’s rage is more focused and intense than ever. In fact, if I had to choose one simple word to describe this album, I would choose ‘intense’.
The tracks mix furious speed with sharp grooves that don’t always take an obvious route to get to their destination. There’s some atypical riffs and mid-paced aggression here that makes for a battering, bewildering listen, and these are interspersed with the kind of nasty, chaotic grinding blast beats that will surely make the most cynical of grindfreaks smile.
Despite the noisecore/mathcore edge that this has, and despite how unhinged and chaotic it can be, there’s still a certain precision to the delivery and performances that straps everything down firmly before the mayhem fully takes hold and ruins everything. Warfuck definitely know what they are doing.
The vocals are insectile, savage screams that are occasionally added to by deeper growls. It’s the right type of style for music as feral as this, and acts as the proverbial icing on the cake.
This Was Supposed to Be Fun has been worth the wait, and Warfuck once again prove to be an enjoyable, individual proposition in the world of grind.
