Interview with Pénitence Onirique


V.I.T.R.I.O.L. by Pénitence Onirique is 47 minutes of scathing black metal, forged from darkness and unleashed with the precision assault of a targeted viral plague. Emotive melodies and blackened riffs create an atmosphere of lethal moods, making it an album that’s easy to like for black metal affectionados.

Introduce us to Pénitence Onirique!

P.O is a duo consisting of Bellovesos behind all instruments and composition and Diviciacos for lyrics and vocals. The idea is to create an atmospheric and complex music with lyrics that gives way to a relatively individual interpretation according to what the listener feels.

What are your influences?

D: If we talk about musical influences, I think we can speak of European black metal bands from the 90’s (especially the Swedish ), bands from the new « post » and progressive metal scene, but also some Doom, Ambient, New Wave and Drone stuff. For other influences, mainly alchemy, esoterism, fantasy literature, religion and Human nature.


Name five things you’ve listened to recently that you’d recommend

D: Hyperion, Darkenhöld, The Ruins of Beverast especially Rain upon the impure, Memoria Vetusta III by Blut Aus Nord and Glaciation.

B: Cocteaux Twins, Urfaust, Colosseum, Bahaus, Obsequiae.

Tell us about your debut album, V.I.T.R.I.O.L.

D: V.I.T.R.I.O.L consists of various initiatory journeys, which lead to an acceptance of death, an understanding of it, to find an inner peace and to purify our fire to get out a creative impulse. That has been put in correlation with an alchemical journey and the discovery of the philosopher’s stone.

How did you choose the cover artwork?

B:We wanted to invite the listener to question the monolithic aspect of this passage, he has the choice to conduct his being where he wants, take comfort in what he knows what he sees as stable and familiar, or to let guided by curiosity and awakening.

How important is good album art to you?

D: Definitively the best way to install the universe and the background for the sound.

What’s the process you use for writing songs?

B: As soon as some songs are composed and the whole atmosphere is laid, they are recorded, texts are written and finally the voices are recorded gradually. Each of us has a job to do and does as he pleases.

How do you think your music will progress in the future?

B: the compositions are primarily visual in my mind and I would say that the music that results will have limits as those of my imagination.

What’s your favourite song on the album and why?

D: Really difficult one but I think it’s the last one « Carapace de fantasme vide » because for me it is the most epic and the most radical song. This is also the most emotional and at the end even if we can find some kind of inner peace, the end of the journey is particularly chaotic, be in peace is not enough to necessarily be saved.

What does the rest of the year hold for Pénitence Onirique?

B: Writing the new album and the possible creation of a line-up for live presentations.
