Brazilian thrashers Nervosa’s second album Agony is a relentlessly intense listen that savagely displays its ripping thrash metal with confidence and aplomb. Prika Amaral showed her passion for metal and answered a few questions about the band…
For those who are unfamiliar with your band – introduce yourself, give us a bit of background to Nervosa and how you formed.
I began the band in 2010 with Fernanda Terra (old drummer), we wrote 4 songs and many girls played in the Nervosa, but nobody was professional, in July 2011 I met Fernanda Lira and she completed the line-up. Fernanda Terra left the band in October 2012, in January 2013 we recorded our first album and then in February 2013 Pitchu completed the band. Now we released our second album Agony and we are on tour around the world promoting it.
What are your influences?
My influences on guitar are: Dimebag, Kerry K. And Jeff H., Gary Holt, Alex Skolnick, etc… as a band are: Sepultura, Slayer, Metallica, Testament, Exodus, Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Morbid Angel, etc…
What are you listening to at the moment that you would like to recommend?
I’m listening the new albums from Death Angel and Destruction, theses albums are awesome, I recommend Jungle Rot, Lacerated and Carbonized, Havok, Woslom, Hexen and Dying Fetus.
How do you feel that you fit into the wider thrash metal scene?
I don’t know, we are a new band, but the thing has been so fast. We are a lucky band and I’m grateful for all support.
Give us a bit of background to Agony – any particular concepts or ideas you want to discuss? Tell us about the album artwork!
This new album Agony is a little bit more aggressive, cause have more influences from death metal. The lyrics speak about corruption and human behaviours. So, the idea for the cover art and for the title is the same, is about the feeling that we feel about these themes, I’m feel with agony about corruption, hypocrisy, arrogance, etc..
How do you go about writing your songs?
All the songs have participation of all three. I always do some riffs and I send to the girls, or Fernanda sends me some riffs I put the guitars, some modifications, or I put more riffs whatever. All the girls participate of writing process. Is a mix of ideas. And then me and Fernanda write the lyrics and Fernanda puts the voices in the songs and finally I put the guitar solos.
How did the recording process go?
Is similar of writing, but when we record we began recording the drums, after guitar and bass, and then vocals, backing vocals and guitar solos.
What’s your favourite song on the album and why?
Hostages, Hypocrisy, Failed System, Intolerance Means War and Wayfarer. But my favourite guitar solo is in Cyber War.
What’s the Nervosa live show like?
Energy, mosh pit, but we are a new band and we are getting better.
What would be your dream tour to go out on?
To do tours all the time is a dream, but of course play with the bands that are a huge influences for us, like: Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Kreator, Sodom, Vader, etc… in this year we’ll realise a dream, we’ll do a tour with Destruction!
What does the future hold for Nervosa?
We have many tours till the end of this year, we are on tour here in Europe, in 28th July we’ll go to Canada and USA east cost tour, we’ll back to Brazil to do two shows maybe, then come back to Europe to do a tour together with Destruction, Flotsam and Jetsam, and Enforce in September/October, and then East European tour for 15 days and finally we’ll come back to Brazil. Next year we have some plans for more tours around the world. Our life now is the band and we live on the road, cause we love it.
