Uncultivates – This Will Become Clear Later, Like the French Revolution (Review)

Uncultivates - This Will Become Clear Later, Like the French RevolutionThis is the debut album from Irish hardcore band Uncultivates.

This Will Become Clear Later, Like the French Revolution brings us 29 minutes of hard rocking hardcore shenanigans. Featuring members of God Alone and Worn Out, (both of whom I sadly haven’t reviewed, but I would definitely recommend you check out), Uncultivates mix together elements of hardcore, post-hardcore, and mathcore into a compelling brew that’s hot and tasty.

Uncultivates exist in that special stylistic place somewhere between Deadguy and Every Time I Die. This is only a rough guide to what This Will Become Clear Later, Like the French Revolution sounds like, but you get the general idea. Suffice to say, if you’re a fan of bands like those, this record is very easy to like.

Uncultivates have amassed a fine selection of riffs across this album. The songs hit hard, rage fiercely, yet have a sense of fun that’s entertaining. The songwriting emphasises angular guitars, jagged grooves, and sharp screams, making for an album that’s more aggressive and hostile than you might initially expect, especially given the album cover and band concept. It’s pulled off with energy and character though, allowing the band to balance barbed riffy mayhem with compelling irregular hooks and a winning charisma.

My only minor complaint is the track Interlude, which is what it sounds like – it’s actually a good song for the first two thirds of it, but spoils the album’s flow somewhat. On the flipside, one of my favourite songs is probably the closer – The Ice Bed World Tour of North America – which has a first-album-Norma-Jean level of brutality going on. Very, very nice indeed.

This Will Become Clear Later, Like the French Revolution is fun, enjoyable, and guaranteed to get you to put your dancing shoes on. Uncultivates have a spring in their step, a song in their hearts, and a riff up their sleeves.

Very highly recommended.
