Dying Fetus – Make Them Beg for Death (Review)

Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg for DeathDying Fetus are a US death metal band and this is their ninth album.

Ahh, Dying Fetus. Old reliable. And I mean that in the very best of ways. After all, they are one of the greatest death metal bands in the world, in my humble opinion. Let me make it clear from the very start – Make Them Beg for Death absolutely rules.

Dying Fetus excel in their brutal brand of death metal. Make Them Beg for Death contains all of the Dying Fetus calling cards that you would want to hear in a lean 38 minutes; mountain-sized riffs that are as catchy as they are impossible to not move to, bursts of blasting speed that are withering in their murderous intensity, and explosions of technicality that are dazzlingly violent. Add to this the band’s dual vocal assault that’s not only full of vicious personality, but frequently uses inspired rhythms and vocal patterns, and you have songs that are just shockingly good.

The Dying Fetus formula is a well-oiled killing machine at this point, churning out songs that are as memorable as they are enjoyable. These new tracks power through their running time with the subtlety and presence of a bomb. The music is ripe with hooks the size of tanks, and every bit as devastating. There are so many memorable riffs, arrangements, and structures that the songs are simultaneously new and familiar. The music is instantly recognisable as Dying Fetus, and Make Them Beg for Death is welcomed like an old friend, albeit one that wants to smash your skull in.

Make Them Beg for Death is another top tier album from this superlative band that’s a great addition to their glowing discography. I may be admittedly biased because I love Dying Fetus so much, but Make Them Beg for Death is a crushingly savage record that deserves a spot in any death metal collection.

Essential listening.
