This is the debut album from, Uamh, a solo black metal band from the US.
At the Edge of the Loch is a 42-minute atmospheric black metal album that has a Celtic influence. Raw, but not overly so, the entire experience of this album is one that has quality of execution woven deep into its makeup.
Rich in melody and depth, At the Edge of the Loch boasts a wealth of atmospheric content for the listener to get lost in. The songs are heavily imbued with feeling and emotive presence. This is as you would want it from an atmospheric black metal release, of course. However, the artist behind Uamh has this down to fine art, and the music just drips with emotion as it paints its textured pictures across the album’s running time.
The music has an enticing, hypnotic quality to it that’s easy to get lost in. Despite its well-used repetitive aspects, the artist uses a range of paces and dynamics to create enjoyable songs that absorb the listener’s attention. There’s a cinematic feel, as if the listener is being taken on a journey through stimulatory experiences. The emotive guitars move through time and space with blackened ease, casting spells of melancholy and dark imagery. It’s well-crafted, offering an immersive world to explore, while being effectively curated by an artist that understands how to build atmosphere and mood to strong effect.
I’ve been very impressed by Uamh, and the artist is clearly talented. At the Edge of the Loch is a great find for anyone into atmospheric black metal, and I thoroughly recommend it if you’re a fan of the style.
Essential listening – don’t miss this one.
