Tsjuder – Helvegr (Review)

Tsjuder - HelvegrThis is the sixth album from Norwegian black metallers Tsjuder.

Helvegr boasts 41 minutes of relentless and merciless Norwegian black metal. It’s fast, fiery, and murderously intense. Tsjunder have returned.

Playing the classic style of furious 90s black metal that they were actually around for, Helvegr is an impressively scathing beast. The well-crafted songs assault the listener with choice blackened riffs, and it’s hard to not get swept away by their skilfully shaped distortion. Grim melodies, harsh drums, and blood-curdling screams make for songs that don’t know how to do anything other than excel. Macabre esoteric moods and atmospheres are wrought amidst the carnage, but ultimately Tsjuder are all about the brutal blackened aggression.

While the songs are holistic entities in their own right, it’s the guitars that frequently captivate and transfix. Some of the riffs and dark melodies are downright hypnotic, while also being packed with hooks and really making the listener want to headbanger to them. Very often while listening to Helvegr I just can’t stop from moving. Tsjuder tap into that primal well of pure, true 90s black metal on this album, and the results are masterful.

These new songs are striking examples of the traditional Norwegian style, delivered with contemporary passion and zeal. Venomous, diabolical, and powerful, Helvegr is a thoroughly enjoyable slice of classic black metal that is remarkably potent.

Very highly recommended.
